Cramps

May. 17th, 2002 06:01 am

Gah, stupid stomach, can't it get over this already?!

What actually causes the cramping feeling? Any advice on how to make it stop beyond just waiting for it to pass?

So I got the phonecall and left the building after food. I bought a sandwich and juice in Boots and managed all of about three bites of it. However the juice helped the hunger and didn't feel like it was burning through my stomach lining, which is odd because given the relative acidity of a tuna sandwich and a bottle of apple juice I'd have thought the latter more likely to do that.

Then the afternoon was spent in a relatively pleasant journey to Fleet and a hellish rush-hour-hitting return to Peterborough. Every so often I remind myself why I don't do tube trains at rush hour, and today I excelled in finding the hottest day of the year so far (or possibly not but it felt like it) to really drive home the point.

But I'm back now, I have the ear drops to ward off ear pain should it go back to aching instead of just feeling sore, and in less than ten minutes Buffy starts.

I'm having a good year. With the illness and the awful journey I've got good reason to be utterly pissed off right now, but I'm generally pretty happy with life. This is what my ankhs symbolise. Life and enjoyment of life. Even in the face of public transport.

After surviving for two days on a diet of a bar of dairy milk, a creme egg and several litres of orange juice, today I am hungry. I had a cup-a-soup this morning but now it's past my lunchtime and I want some real food.

Unfortunately I made a tactical error in my quest for ear drops. I called the doctor again and was told he was still with a patient but can call me back. So I gave them my work number. My work number. The number of the phone that sits on the desk. My mobile is right next to it. My mobile moves - hence the name. So now I'm stuck at the desk waiting for a phonecall and I can't go out in search of food. I've been waiting half an hour now and I'm getting really hungry.

I think there's some way of forwarding calls from the office phone, but I don't know what it is. I think I might have to send someone else to the shops for me at this rate...

... my ear isn't hurting! How did that happen?

So do I get drops just in case or forget about it?
hawkida: (Default)
I called the doctor's surgery and if I call back later I should be able to talk to my doctor and arrange to get a prescription without having to actually see the doctor. Not that this helps much - I still have to go to Fleet to pick up the prescription. However, my ear is still hurting and I know from past experience it just doesn't get better by itself, so I may be on a jaunt out to Hampshire this afternoon.

Earache

So now I've got an earache. I have eczema in my ears, apparently. Every so often this causes an ear infection and I need antibiotic drops to fix it. Of course, to get them I have to visit the doctor. I suppose with my immune system low from the food poisoning or stomach bug or whatever it was the infection got a good chance to attack. It must be 18 months or so since I last got this so I suppose it was about due. *sigh*

Slept away most of the day. Discovered eating is a BAD idea (you are spared the details). Have a stomach ache and still feel tired. At least this could explain why I spent most of the weekend asleep. Time to break open the echinacea.

There's a recycling scheme in Peterborough. You put all your recyclable stuff into a big green box that you put out at the same time as your dustbin. If you don't have a box then you phone the council and ask them to bring you one. I did this because I had a huge amount of cardboard to dispose of and they are prepared to recycle cardboard. This morning before I realised I really wasn't in any condition to go to work, I dragged my green box and dustbin out of the garden and onto the pavement at the back of the house.

Several hours passed.

I realised the bin men had been while I was sleeping and went to retrieve the wheely bin and green box. Outside on the pavement lay my bin on its side, empty. And that was it. So I brought the bin back in and hunted around a bit for the green box. It's not there. Now, I know I packed it pretty full of cardboard, and I know I put a bunch of bags of cardboard next to it, but the bin men know what to do with the green boxes, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to steal one.

So where's it gone? And NOW how do I get rid of the rest of the cardboard? I'm going to have to phone the council again...

There's nothing to do. Well, that's not strictly true, I've volunteered to do the convention listing stuff for [livejournal.com profile] the_magician. But there's no sense of urgency to that. For some reason there's hardly anyone in the office. Maybe they've decided to spend their resource-pool time on holiday but I don't really have enough holiday spare to do that - and it would be a waste of days off anyway.

I spent some days at new year, some on Corflu, some on moving and that leaves me enough for recovery time after Novacon and 2 weeks in America in July. Oh, and the days between Christmas and New Year. I've got it all marked up on a mini calendar and my calculations say that leaves 2 days unaccounted for. And I can always drop the December days if necessary. So it's tempting to just change my plans and jet off somewhere but I'm not the sort of person who does that. And I'd only regret wasting the days later.

And where the hell would I jet off to, anyway?

Brown Hair

The hair dye was successful. At least, for some values of successful. My hair is now approximately its natural colour and thus requires no more effort on the colouring front.

But it's brown and it's boring. I think I preferred the red. In fact, I know I did. Even if it did make everyone do a double take at first, and even if I did get comments like "Nice hair, which corpse did it come off?" (Ian Sorenson, what do you expect...?). Damn.

Picture here )

So I'm currently in the process of trying to dye my hair back to its natural brown colour but given past experience anything could happen. What colour do you think I'm going to end up with? Place your bets now...

Well...

Now I know why the previous owners didn't bother to take their lawnmower with them.

I took it out of the shed and the handle dropped off. I secured the handle and plugged it in and it went zzzzZZZZZzzzz but nothing moved so I unplugged it and looked at the underneath and realised that it was pretty well rusted into place.
I managed to move the blades a bit, trapping my thumb in the process, but also in the process realised they are about as sharp as a plank of wood. So I think I need a new lawnmower.

If only I'd realised this sooner. We could have raced it last week!

My poor legs! And feet! And heart!

Jungle Book groove party is HARD! Especially when you have barely any sense of rhythm (that'd be me, then).

I've got windows open and I'm downing water like a mad thing. But hey, it's fun. And it's good for me.

Can someone with Sky confirm whether or not this week's trailer for Thursday's episode is utterly spoiler ridden? Twice I've nearly seen it now. First time I switched off, second time I closed my eyes, put my fingers in my ears and counted out loud to drown out the sound. Am I right to be this wary or is it reasonably innocuous stuff shown in the trailer?

Oh, and please be careful with the answers - 'avoid' or 'relax' is what I'm looking for, not "Well it shows a scene where X does Y..."

I went into town (actually, these days it's "the city", isn't it?) to buy a birthday present for my neice. I bought her a football kit and some nail decorations having conferred with [livejournal.com profile] ang_grrr on what's hot with seven year olds these days.

Upon arrival, though, I found a big market going on. All these stalls with goods from the continent and so much of it food! So I came away with five different types of honey, some parma ham and some french bread. Then I bought a Simpsons poster at Woolworths and a chicken and some cordial at Iceland.

Then I walked all the way home and realised I forgot to get any wrapping paper. I really shouldn't be allowed out with money.

I did, however, resist the many assorted dried sausages that were on offer. They looked interesting but at three quid each for something shrivelled and mysterious I decided not to bother.

27th July

How does 27th July sound for a barbecue, then? Anything clashing with that for everyone?
hawkida: (Default)
Okay, so I've checked my hospital appointment. On 27th August I'm having two wisdom teeth forcibly removed from my head whilst under a general anaesthetic. Do you think I'm likely to be in a fit state by that weekend to do this barbecue thing?
hawkida: (Default)
I posted earlier in some comments section somewhere about how I figured eating just half my pizza and using the Playstation dancemat constitute something approaching a healthy lifestyle. But actually, the only thing I did yesterday that is out of the ordinary is use the dancemat (sorry, I can't bring myself to call it a Rave Station) and Jungle Book Groove Party and today I'm feeling all energised and cheery. This is good. So tonight I will beat Baloo. I might even move up beyond "normal" level. I've been out and bought a PS1 memory card since the PS2 one I already own isn't happy to save from a PS1 game. Oversight on Sony's part or deliberate ploy to make people buy more peripherals? Hmm...

Pizza

That pizza is turning out to be a bit of a letdown. First the banana is all bland and pointless, and now I find that a slice for breakfast just isn't filling. Time for a chocolate croissant from Pret, I think.
hawkida: (Default)
I want to do the housewarming thing. Only I feel horribly inexperienced in this kind of stuff and I'm not quite sure where to start. I've never thrown a party. Ever.

So far the plan is a very vague "Maybe I could have a barbecue in August". So taking that as a starting point, help me out, here. Would you come to a barbecue one weekend in Peterborough? Would it make a difference to you if I offered crash space? I can comfortably put up about five people (double bed, double bottom bunk, single upper bunk), more as the comfort decreases (sofa, floorspace). There is a B&B at the end of the road that we could also make use of. Does this sound like a good plan? If not what would you recommend?
